Juveniles are preyed on by deep sea sharks and fishes. Sperm whales and sleeper sharks such as Somniosus pacificus are the two known predators of adult giant squid. Squids actually have 3 hearts! The kidney, a slightly larger organ is located in the same location as the systematic heart and may be covering the heart. The heart pumps oxygenated blood from the gills to the rest of the body.

Heart and Kidney: Ask students what structure is used to pump blood through the squid’s body. Despite being a popular prey item, squid remain plentiful in the wild. Small squid are eaten by almost any kind of predator imaginable, but their main predators are penguins, seals, sharks such as the grey reef shark, whales such as the sperm whale, and humans. Adult squid like to feed on fish like cod and hake. Squid of medium size and growth most often feast on crustaceans, red fish, sand lance, young cod mackerel, herring and sculpin. They often prey on other smaller squid for food, although only in extreme situations. Some species prey on seals, mollusks, mackerel, tuna, squid, stingrays and crustaceans. They are predators who eat invertebrates and large sea mammals including seals and dolphins.

Even sperm whales enjoy feeding upon them in larger regions. In fact, they make up a great deal of the food source for birds, a variety of fish, and even sharks when you are talking about the giant squid.
